There are no rear air vents, which is a major omission in Australia. Cargo space is better than average at 360L but there arent that many storage spots in the cabin apart from the door bins. MAZDA3 SP25 GT, FROM $29,990 DRIVE-AWAY The 3s naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine is good for 138kW/250Nm and fuel use is 6.1 litres/100km for the auto or 6.5L for the manual. The interior is first rate and the infotainment is still up there but the car is starting to show its age (a new one is due next year) in other areas: the boot is relatively small at 308 litres and rear leg CHOICES HYUNDAI I30 SR FROM $29,990 DRIVE-AWAY The SR, like all these cars, is nudging hot hatch territory with a 1.6-litre turbo engine good for 150kW/265Nm. Fuel use is 7.5L/100km with either transmission and theres a practical 395L cargo area. Leather highlights are on a par with the competition. This trio all have the latest active safety features as standard but the Hyundai is the only one to have adaptive cruise control as standard. An eight-inch infotainment screen displays satnav, smartphone mirroring and digital radio. It has a standard five-year warranty, backed by annual/ 15,000km servicing. Pay up front and the first three trips will cost $807. HOLDEN ASTRA RS-V, FROM $29,990 DRIVE-AWAY A turbo 1.6-litre engine endows the RS-V with 147kW/300Nm and combined fuel consumption is just 6.3L/100km for the auto and 6.5L/100km for the manual but the Astra needs the more expensive 95 RON petrol. QUESTION My wife and I are looking for a new car as our current Mazda3 is 12 years old. We are tossing up between a Hyundai i30 GDI SR, Astra RS-V and a Mazda SP25 GT. All seem to be about the $30,000 mark. Would you recommend any or all of these. Are there any others in that price range and how about the Honda equivalent? Mal ANSWER The $30,000 drive-away price is about right for these vehicles _ with a manual transmission and during their EOFY sales period. Opting for a six-speed auto is free in the case of the Holden (check the website for their four-day sale details) and adds $2000 to the Mazda for a selfshifter with the same number of gears. The i30s price climbs by $3000 with a seven-speed dualclutch transmission. W H I C H C A R ? Id be looking at the Hyundai as my first choice in this group but its such a close contest it will come down to how you rate each vehicles looks and your personal preference on the ride.
