Stuart, who left Parramatta to coach the Raiders after the sacking of David Furner, has wasted no time stamping his authority on his new team, training them in 40C heat and sending them to aweek-long elite training camp. The former NSW and Australia coach has seen big potential for McCrone at hooker. Faith inMoses to deliver title MOSESWigness has taken over the reins again at Brothers Rugby League club for the 2014 season. Wigness, who coached the club for three years and won the 2010 and 2011 premierships, replaces Anthoiny Castro who had held the position for the past two seasons. The clubs seniors sign-on day is at Airport Tavern today from 1pm. Brothers spokesman John Adams said the clubwanted to regain the premiership that they lost to Palmerston last year. New rules to endmass debates MANLY coach Geoff Toovey says captain Jamie Lyon wont have to change his on-field approach to referees despite recent NRL rule changes. Lyon and Canterburys Michael Ennis are seen as two of the games leading debaters when it comes to arguing withmatch officials. But they are set to be stymied by a new law that limits where andwhen captains can speak to refs. Under new rules captains will only be able to speak to refs during a stoppage in play. Lachlan schooled by Shark RUGBY LEAGUE ByDOUGBOOTH MacKillop Sharks centre Levi Russell with student Lachlan Miller at the merger announcement yesterday Picture: JUSTIN SANSON LACHLAN Miller wants to play senior rugby league when he grows up. The MacKillop Catholic College student discovered plenty of ways to help him reach that goal from the now MacKillop Sharks hardtackling centre Levi Russell yesterday. Lachlan, 13, and Russell, 22, were integral parts of the launch to merge the Sharks with the Palmerstonbased college. I like rugby league because of the teamwork that is involved in playing, said Lachlan, who has been playing the game for four years. It is not just a one-man game. I like running with the ball and scoring tries. Russell said young players such as Lachlan were the future of the 13-a-side game. We are looking for a premiership this season and building links such as this is vital for the future, he said. College principal Loretta Graham said MacKillop was trying to build a community spirit through sporting organisations and this was another step forward. David Graham is the Year 8 music co-ordinator at MacKillop but his other passion is rugby league. Growing up in Cairns, he played his first rugby league in Queensland and last year he was with the Palmerston Raiders. However, as the brainchild behind the merger of the school and club, he has new allegiances. The Palmerston demographic is much different to Darwin, Graham said. Queensland and NSW influence the culture. Graham said the merger would help provide a grassroots pathway that had not existed before in rugby league in the Northern Territory. It is important that we try and bridge the gap between school and club, he said. The Sharks will hold their senior sign-on at Mary MacKillop School today from 10am. Wallabies coach Michael Chieka at a press conference at ARU headquarters Picture: PHIL HILYARD Full-strength Irish a perfect test MICHAEL Cheika expects Ireland to bring a full-strength squad to Australia in June and says the three-Test series against the Grand Slam champions will provide a perfect benchmark for the Wallabies in the run to next years World Cup. The Test coach recently returned from a trip to the UK where he watched the Irish secure victories over Scotland and England, and claim a dominant Six Nations crown. By remaining unbeaten, Ireland won their first Grand Slam since 2009 and in a sign of their current strength only their third Grand Slam ever. Their first was in 1948. It came as no shock, said the Wallabies coach who cut his coaching teeth in Irish rugby with Leinster. I am not surprised at all about Irelands rise, Cheika said. I think they have been showing those signs of consistency and the way they play. They have also got a very good young batch of players coming through. As do we. Cheika likened the upcoming June series, which will see Tests in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, to the 2016 inbound tour of England. Eddie Jones men were also Grand Slam champions that year and whitewashed the Aussies 3-0. Its very similar to how England came here in 2016, Cheika said. We will get a look at ourselves now, two years later. And see where we are at against the best opposition in Europe. Theyre very consistent and theyll be in good spirits. Ireland have taken the bar up as far as the consistency of play and how theyre delivering their footy. For us, we will be different as well. Players that were getting cap one and cap two in that series are now getting cap 30 and 40. IAIN PAYTEN Sea Eagles also cheated NRL salary cap investigators found the Manly Sea Eagles cheated the salary cap in convincing skipper Daly Cherry Evans to backflip on the Gold Coast Titans in 2015 in a deal that was so suspect their then chief executive threatened to quit. Cherry Evans agreed to an eight-year $10 million contract, at the time the most lucrative in NRL history, to play the remainder of his career at the Sea Eagles. However, the money registered in salary cap documents was less than what he was actually being paid, with sources revealing he was getting another $400,000 outside of the cap. There are no suggestions Cherry Evans was aware of the payment discrepancies in a deal that was done between his manager and Manly officials. However, the NT News can reveal that then chief executive Joe Cross refused to sign off on Cherry Evans contract and offered to hand in his resignation, such were his concerns. Instead chairman and owner Scott Penn signed off on the deal before it was registered by the NRL. The NT News can also reveal Manly also secured the signature of centre Dylan Walker from the South Sydney Rabbitohs under a similar arrangement to Cherry Evans, in that he was paid outside the salary cap figures. In 800,000 pages of documents captured from mobile phones and computer hard drives, the NRL found a total of 13 players had been paid outside the cap over five years. Five of them were serious breaches the rest for more minor infringements like free cars that were supposed to have been included in the salary cap. The NRL finally completed its nine-month investigation by handing down a series of penalties yesterday in revealing the club had paid an extra $1.5 million to players outside of the cap. The penalties included a $750,000 fine to be reduced to $500,000 if the club undertakes appropriate governance changes to ensure there is no repeat of the breaches. The club will play $330,000 under the salary cap for the next two seasons. Roosters CEO Joe Kelly, the former Manly boss, was suspended for 12 months. Sea Eagles chief operating officer Neil Bare was suspended for 12 months Coach Trent Barrett got an official warning and league immortal Bob Fulton will no longer be considered for a role as an Australian selector.
