WHY D ID N 'T HE USE THE INFLUENCE HE OBVIOUSLY FEELS HE HAS IN CANBERRA TO TRY AND GET SOME ACTION ON THE TERRITORY 'S AIRPORTS. OR, HAS IT SUDDENLY CEASED TO BECOME AN ISSUE IN H IS MIND. 6 PERHAPS THE OPPOSITION LEADER, WHO LAST WEEK STOOD UP IN TH IS HOUSE LOUDLY PROCLAIMING HE HAS H IS FINGER ON THE COLLECTIVE PUBLIC PULSE, FEELS THE AIRPORTS ARE NO LONGER AN ISSUE. BUT IF THAT'S WHAT HE THINKS, HE IS SADLY MISTAKEN. THE QUICKEST POSSIBLE UPGRADE OF THE AIRPORTS IS CR IT ICAL TO THE TERRITORY. IT IS NO SECRET THAT THE REDEVELOPMENT OF OUR TWO MAJOR AIRPORTS WILL ACT AS A S IGN IF ICANT CATALYST IN HELPING L IFT BUSINESS CONFIDENCE. THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY IN DARWIN HAS MADE IT QUITE PLAIN THAT IT BELIEVES A NEW TERMINAL WOULD HAVE A DRAMATIC AND PO S IT IV E IMPACT ON PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT DEC ISIONS. BOTH TERMINALS ARE CR IT ICAL TO OUR TOURISM STRATEGY. AND OF COURSE, THE AIRPORT REDEVELOPMENTS WOULD PROVIDE A MAJOR BOOST FOR THE TERRITORY 'S CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. THE AIRPORTS ARE NOT SIMPLY A PASSING ISSUE, THEY ARE A C R IT ICAL FACTOR IMPACTING ON BOTH THE SHORT AND LONG-TERM ECONOMIC PROGRESS OF THE TERRITORY.
