AND DISTURBINGLY SOME ECHOES FROM THE PAST HAVE ALREADY BEEN HEARD. 8 LOOK AT THE SITUATION AT ALICE SPRINGS AIRPORT. I T 'S HARDLY SOMETHING FROM WHICH THE TERRITORY CAN DRAW ANY COMFORT. MR SPEAKER, AS YOU WOULD KNOW ONLY TOO WELL, THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN A TEMPORARY UPGRADE OF TERMINAL F A C IL IT IE S AT ALICE. IN THE 12-MONTH PERIOD TO MARCH 31 TH IS YEAR ALICE SPRINGS AIRPORT HANDLED 477,177 PASSENGERS 13.8 PER CENT INCREASE ON THE PREVIOUS 12 MONTHS. AND THAT BY THE WAY IS ABOUT 119,000 MORE PASSENGERS THAN THE DARWIN TERMINAL HANDLED IN THAT 12-MONTH PERIOD. THESE FIGURES GRAPHICALLY HIGHLIGHT THE NEED FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION AT ALICE SPRINGS TERMINAL. AND A TEMPORARY EXTENSION OF THE EXIST ING FAC IL ITY WAS PROMISED SOME 15 MONTHS AGO. WORK ON THIS MUCH-NEEDED TEMPORARY UPGRADE, WORTH $1.3 M ILLION, WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE STARTED IN MARCH OR APR IL TH IS YEAR AND HAVE BEEN COMPLETED LAST MONTH. THIS PROMISE IS MOW IN TATTERS. ONE MONTH AFTER THE SCHEDULED COMPLETION OF THE UPGRADE WE ARE S T IL L WAITING FOR WORK TO COMMENCE ON THE TERMINAL EXTENSIONS.
