- 8 OFFICE OF POLICY AND PLANNING In January 1987 the Office of Federal Affairs was renamed the Office of Policy and Planning in recognition of the widening focus of the Office from issues of a strictly Federal nature to issues relating to the development of broad government policy. The specific functions of the Office include: a contributory role in the development of policy on issues of major importance before they are presented to Cabinet e.g. major development projects, airports, Statehood, Land Rights, other Aboriginal issues and Kakadu National Park; a co-ordinating role in the implementation of policies which cut across more than one portfolio area e.g. defence, review of regulations and government administration; advice to Departments and Authorities and, where required, co-ordination on major issues between the Territory Government and Commonwealth and State Governments; secretariat services to the Northern Territory Development Council. The NTDC was established to provide high level advice to the Chief Minister and Cabinet on broad issues of economic development. It has helped to establish an effective working relationship between the public and private sectors in seeking to promote Territory industry; secretariat services to the Regulatory Review Committee. The Committee comprises the Departmental Heads of Treasury, Law and Industries and Development and is chaired by the Secretary, Department of the Chief Minister. Its task is to initiate, co-ordinate and monitor action to comprehensively review Government regulatory activities and administrative procedures, particularly those which effect business; provision of ongoing economic analysis to the Chief Minister; review of medium and longer term policy development issues.
