Bricklayers construct and repair internal as well as external walls on buildings and other structures. Workers need to complete an apprenticeship before they can be qualified to work solo or independently, which includes a Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying. They may also need to acquire a builders licence if they are to set up their own business. WAITER 2If walking 10,000 steps a day is a goal, tryworking as a waiter. Workers take and deliverfood orders as well as supply beverages for their customers, so they walk from the kitchen and/or bar to the table and back several times during one meal, and juggle several tables of customers during one shift. It is predominantly a cardio workout, however, carrying several plates of food can add a little extra weight resistance to tone arms. Formal qualifications typically are not required to start out, however a Responsible Service of Alcohol course can be necessary to work at most restaurants and hotels, while an entry-level hospitality certificate can be an advantage. METER READER 3Water, gas and electricity providers requirestaff to record and check usage at residential, commercial and industrial sites so customers can be charged for the service. Meter readers can be required to walk up to 20km a day as they go down neighbourhood streets, reading the meter of each building. Training is provided to starters, who need to be accurate, self-motivated, and work effectively with minimal supervision, as most work alone. Workers do need to be prepared to work through all weather conditions. BODY TALK A T O P W A Y T O S T A Y O U T D O O R S A N D K E E P F I T BRICKLAYER Nigel Croke says his job is a great option for people who want to keep moving. Theres a lot of lifting, building bricks and cement and mortar, he says. I like being outside and using my body. Croke got a taste for life on worksites when he was growing up, helping out his pop in his business. He worked as a brickies labourer in school holidays. In 2008, his TAFE campus made it compulsory for apprentices to attend the WorldSkills regional competitions, and his skill saw him qualifying to compete at the international competition held in Canada the following year. He left as the third-best young bricklayer in the world, winning the bronze medal for his category. Aside from helping him to hone his craftsmanship, Croke says it has been good for his career opportunities, both for the contacts he made and to list on his resume. It opened up doors to go where you want in the trade, he says. After that, I moved to England for a few years and worked in landscape gardening. He says work is plentiful. For anyone considering it as a career, theres too much there's enough work to work 24/7, he says. Its a very, very good time to be a bricklayer.
