Darwin City Councillor Ian Fraser and Maggie Hickey: sewerage and drainage failures are having disastrous impacts on the environment and the quality of life for many Territorians. The Country Liberal Adminis tration is failing to take land use planning seriously and Territorians are paying the price. Planning Failures Recent debacles include: a raw sewerage spill through Cullen Bay homes and into the marinaPAWA equipment just wasnt up to the job. homes flooded in Darwin because storm water trunk drains have not been upgraded. building a petrol station only a few metres from homes in Coconut Grove which has outraged residents. The Planning Authority has said that under existing laws they had no control over the development. No Action Commencing in February this year, an extensive review of planning was conducted for the Country Liberal Administration by Mr Earl James. His recommendations were presented to Minister Palmer in June. Four months later, there has still been no action! Minister Palmer recently admitted to Parliament that ...the planning laws in the Northern Territory are not as good as they could be Territorians can feel rightly outraged that theyre not adequately protected from planning disasters, and that the Country Liberals have not acted on the solutions put forward by Earl James.
