In t r o d u c t io n In September 1996, Dr Joe Baker chaired the Ministerial Workshop on Aquaculture Development in the Northern Territory1. The workshop highlighted key issues and needs of the industry at that time. One major outcome was the formation of the Territory Aquaculture Development Advisory Committee (TADAC). TADAC commissioned the preparation of this Aquaculture Development Plan to build upon the issues and directions of the 1996 workshop and importantly, to establish a vision for the industrys future. The Aquaculture Industry in Australia over the years 1995-96 has grown by 77% to over $396 million. In recognition of this rate of growth, this plan will be reviewed and updated annually by TADAC to ensure its continued relevance. It is deliberately brief. Much of the detail will appear in development plans for each industry sector. This plan identifies where the industry is now, where the industry would like to be in 5 years and some ways in which industry and government can work together to achieve these goals. This Aquaculture Development Plan complements other activities and initiatives being undertaken as part of the National Strategy for Aquaculture2 and its review in 19973. 1 Baker, J. 1996 Ministerial workshop on aquaculture development in the Northern Territory.
