Description
Historically, the Mary River was unique in the Top End in that water did not drain into the sea from a single outflow, but was retained by a system of cheniers resulting in prolonged inundation of floodplains. However, the enlargement of two tidal creeks has significantly reduced this period of inundation and led to saltwater intruding into previously freshwater systems causing large scale die-back of Melaleuca
and other aquatic plants (Williams 1996). It is readily apparent that such a wide range of land and water users in the catchment will also have a wide range of views on the best way to manage land. The Mary River Landcare Group Inc. was formed in 1989 to integrate the many different land and water users with a coherent focus on land management. Their vision “to have an ecologically and economically sustainable catchment for our families and future generations of all Australians to enjoy and benefit from its incredible biodiversity” reflects the need for careful management to ensure the sustainability of the entire catchment,
