Description

Culverts and floodways are commonly built at the location of stream road crossings and can be a significant barrier to fish migration. Little is known of the effect of culverts and floodways on the migration of the local Northern Territory fish species. Therefore an inventory of the culverts and floodways in the outer Darwin area was compiled as a basis to investigate fish migration. The overall objective is to broaden the knowledge on fish habitat and include fish in the regular monitoring programs to assess river health. The study area was the non-urban outer Darwin region in the Litchfield Shire extending South to Darwin River Dam, Leonino Road and Acacia Gap road and West to the Darwin River and Cox Peninsula Road / Darwin River Dam Road. The Eastern extension of the study area was drawn at Wanderrie Road and Acacia Gap Road (Figure 1). The area therefore includes the catchments of the Darwin, Elizabeth and Howard Rivers and Acacia, Amys, Bees, Bennett, Berry, Brooking, Burdens, Edwins, Ella, Fly, Hardy, Holland, Horns, Hughie and Wells Creeks. The inventory revealed a total of 130 culvert and floodway crossings plus four bridges. The details of the stream road crossing survey are presented per stream catchment system. Maps show the location, type and a photograph of each crossing. Crossings with special features such as drops downstream due to erosion, partial blockage from sedimentation, and special constructions are described and discussed. Appendix 1 contains a list of crossings between storm water drains and roads. No information is available of the impact of culverts and floodways on the local Northern Territory fish populations, hence a study to investigate fish migration at stream road crossings is considered of importance. Understanding the extent to which culverts and floodways in the outer Darwin area act as migration barriers for the local fish will be vital for developing guidelines for fish passage for the Northern Territory.,
