Ttie winner, a well known rugby player, wore the XXXX (Fourex) beer symbol. N.T. situation Current advertising &< marketing strategies, particularly in Darwin, -Further reflect the limitations of self regulation. For instance, over the past two months, Darbys nightclub has placed regular advertisments in the N.T. News for free drinks on Thursday nights; i.e. free wine all n i g h t "the ladies" and the first two beers free for "guys" (see Appendix 1). Dix - the Joint Entertainment Complex - advertised $ 1 drinks (standard spirits and draught beer) Wednesday to Saturday from 11 p.m. until midnight (see Appendix 2), whilst others offered cheap drinks "happy hours" (see Appendix 3). Darbys "free drinks" marketing strategy obviously contravenes the National Policy outlined above: wine is presented as though it were a benign substance. Given that women are far more vulnerable to the deleterious effects of alcohol than men (Wodak, 1990), they are being exposed to increased health risk. Moreover, this strategy undermines considerable attempts to educate the community regarding the need for low risk, responsible drinking. It also contravenes the Sex Discrimination Act: unlimited guantities are freely available for "the ladies" while "the guys" are offered only two free beers. 22
