N o rth ern T e rr ito ry W om en's A d v iso ry C ouncil The N orthern Territory W om en's Advisory Council (NTWAC) is appoin ted by th e Chief M inister to provide a com m unication link betw een the N orthern T erritory G overnm ent and w om en of the Territory. The C onvenor and fifteen m em bers are appoin ted for two y ear te rm s and rep re se n t w om en from regional cen tres an d rem ote a reas th ro u g h o u t the Territory. NTWAC is responsib le to the Chief M inister an d opera tes independen tly from its own secre taria t. It m eets regularly in Darwin, Alice Springs and o th er cen tres, and ho lds regional com m unity consu lta tio n s to en su re th a t th e views of T erritory wom en are canvassed a s widely a s possible an d relayed to governm ent. Issu es of concern to w om en w hich NTWAC h a s ra ised w ith the G overnm ent include the re in s ta tem en t of th e E ducation for G irls position (now entitled Principal E ducation Officer, G ender Equity); a review of N orthern Territory b irth ing services; the righ ts of the term inally ill; and im proved services for w om en who are survivors of violence. T hrough the W omen in R em ote A reas Report, NTWAC m ade several recom m endations to governm ent relating to health , access to services, educa tion and welfare areas. The e s tab lish m en t of th e N orthern T erritory W om en's Inform ation Network (INFONET) is a d irec t response to th is report. O ther recom m endations being reviewed include the accom m odation needs of ru ra l w om en visiting u rb a n cen tres for m edical rea so n s an d com m unication netw orks for isolated wom en. NTWACs provision of forum s, w orkshops, sem inars an d lec tu res on top ics su c h as en te rp rise bargaining, equal em ploym ent opportunity , w om en an d the m edia, w om en and h u m an rights, w om en in politics and w om en in sm all b u sin ess , h a s enabled w om en in the N orthern T erritory to im prove the ir knowledge and aw areness ab o u t issu e s w hich affect them .
