ELIMINATION OF DISCRIMINATION The N orthern Territory G overnm ent is com m itted to the e lim ination of all form s of d iscrim ination again st wom en and to the p revention of exploitation of w om en and children in the sex in d u s try an d in the p roduction , publication or sale of pornographic pub lications an d films. D uring 1992 an d 1993 legislation w as in troduced w hich goes som e way to fulfilling th is com m itm ent. A n ti-D isc r im in a tio n A c t 1 9 9 2 C o n cu rren t w ith the appo in tm en t of the first A nti-D iscrim ination C om m issioner for the N orthern Territory, the Anti-Discrimination A ct 1992 com m enced on 1 A ugust 1993. The Act applies to the private and public secto rs of the N orthern Territory an d m akes it unlaw ful for a person to d iscrim inate ag a in st an o th e r p e rso n on several g rounds, including sex, m arita l s ta tu s , pregnancy, paren thood , b re a s t feeding, race an d im pairm ent in the a re a s of work, educa tion , accom m odation, the provision of goods an d services, c lubs an d su p e ran n u a tio n an d in su rance . Sexual h a ra ssm e n t of an o th e r p e rso n is also prohibited conduct in all a re a s covered by th e Act. The pu rpose of the Act is to provide red ress for people w ith a genuine com plain t of d iscrim ination or h a ra ssm en t. The A nti-D iscrim ination C om m issioner also h a s responsib ility for the provision of educa tion and tra in in g program s w ith in th e public and private secto rs of th e N orthern T erritory on an ti-d iscrim ination law and practice, includ ing peoples rig h ts an d responsibilities.
