Training E xtensive tra in ing on dom estic violence is provided to rec ru its , police a ides an d auxiliaries, while sh o rte r revision sess ions are included in a n u m b e r of in-service p rogram s su ch as the Investigators ' C ourse an d the Detective D evelopm ent Program . A to tal of tw enty h o u rs is sp en t on dom estic violence issu es in rec ru it tra in ing, eight h o u rs in auxiliary tra in ing an d six teen h o u rs in aide train ing . T raining m ethodology com prises no t only form al in s tru c tio n on legislation and p rocedures b u t also includes the u se of videos an d role plays. In the role plays u se is m ade of the house w ithin a house facility a t the Police College. The house w ithin a house is a m odel of a su b u rb a n h o u se w hich is designed to create realism in role playing dom estic violence s itua tions. In stru c tio n is also given to m em bers of the Police Force on u n d e rs ta n d in g the cycle of violence an d the social and psychological im pact of dom estic violence on its victim s. D om estic violence tra in in g is undergo ing a m ajor review w ith the aim of en su rin g th a t th e tra in in g is re levan t an d appropria te to the needs of the com m unity. Pilot Program on D ata Collection As th e re su lt of a repo rt to the senior executive of the N orthern T erritory Police in 1992 regard ing a proposal for a six m on th p rogram for the collection of dom estic violence da ta , a pilot p rogram on d a ta collection com m enced in the g rea ter Darwin a rea in April 1993. Police are requ ired to fill o u t a form w henever they a tten d a dom estic d ispu te , even if no action is taken . The form, in te r alia, requ ires the police officer to identify w h a t action w as tak en in each case and to specify any charges th a t are to be laid. W here no action is tak en police are required to explain why. The program shou ld lead to a b e tte r u n d e rs tan d in g of cau ses, con tribu to ry factors and the types of p e rso n s a t risk from dom estic
