W om en's C an cer P reven tio n The N orthern Territory is a p a rtic ip an t in the N ational Program for Preventing C ancer of the Cervix. T hroughou t 1992-93 w orking g roups in D arw in an d Alice Springs, in consu lta tion w ith o ther d istric ts , developed a n indicative p lan for im plem enting an organised ap p ro ach for preven ting cancer of the cervix. M em bership of these g roups included h e a lth professional rep resen ta tion from hosp itals, d istric ts , private p ractice. Aboriginal m edical services, non-governm ent o rgan isations and special co n su m er g roups of w om en who are Aboriginal, of non-E nglish speak ing background an d w om en w ith disabilities. T his program h a s a h igh priority. C ancer of the cervix is essen tia lly preventab le. The N orthern Territory h a s the h ighest d ea th ra te in A ustra lia , due to a m uch h igher th a n average d ea th ra te from cervical can cer am ong Aboriginal w om en. A public education program is being p repared to target Aboriginal w om en, older w om en an d w om en of non- E nglish speak ing background for im plem entation in late 1993. Following a feasibility s tu d y on the im plem entation of th e N ational Program for Early D etection of B reast C ancer in the N orthern Territory, a c o n su lta n t w as em ployed by the C om m onw ealth to develop a p lan to in troduce the program in th e Territory. The Com m onw ealth is p reparing a m odified agreem ent to allow partic ipa tion of the N orthern T erritory in th e N ational program . A W om en's C ancer Prevention C oordinator w as appo in ted in May 1993. N a tio n a l W om en's H ea lth P rogram The N ational W om en's H ealth Program is a cost sh a red program betw een th e Com m onw ealth, S ta te an d T erritory G overnm ents to im plem ent the N ational W om ens H ealth Policy. A N orthern T erritory Advisory C om m ittee for the N ational W om ens H ealth Program recom m ends fund ing to the N orthern Territory an d C om m onw ealth M inisters.
