In G eography an d Econom ics the perform ance of m ales w as slightly b e tte r th a n th a t of fem ales. This project h a s now been com pleted and the repo rt given to the C om m onw ealth D ep artm en t of E m ploym ent, E duca tion and T raining (DEET) w ith recom m endations for follow-up action. F a m ily S c ien ce Fam ily Science, a n a tiona l initiative ru n th ro u g h the Science A ssociation of the N orthern Territory, is aim ed a t actively involving p a re n ts in th e science educa tion of th e ir children. It is directed m ainly a t th e p rim ary school level and provides a n opportun ity for fam ilies to have enjoyable science experiences an d to relate the learn ing of science to fu tu re s tu d ie s an d work. M ajor tra in in g w orkshops were ru n for p a re n ts an d the com m unity in D arw in and Alice Springs. This program sh o u ld help to overcom e any gender b ias in regard to science orig inating in th e hom e. S in g le S ex C la sse s The effect of sep ara tin g year 7 boys from year 7 girls for in s tru c tio n in the m ain su b jec t a reas is being stud ied in a pilot program being carried o u t a t W anguri Prim ary School in D arw in in 1993. The social an d academ ic outcom es of the project are being m onitored a n d will be evaluated a t the conclusion of the year.
