E n try-L evel T ra in in g In 1992 the E m ploym ent an d Skills Form ation C ouncil re leased a repo rt (the C arm ichael Report) en titled The A ustra lian Vocational Certificate S ystem . The repo rt recom m ended a new unified sy stem of entry-level tra in in g com bining the c u rre n t tra ineesh ip an d ap p ren ticesh ip system s, together w ith a variety of pa thw ays for en try level tra in in g to b e tte r equip young people for the workforce. G ender equity is specifically considered an d the system shou ld lead to a g rea ter range an d n u m b e r of entry-level tra in in g oppo rtun ities for young wom en. W om en in S m a ll B u sin e ss In the N orthern Territory it is estim ated th a t there are 2822 w om en who a re self-em ployed or em ployers in the N orthern T erritory private sector. The D ep artm en t of Industries and Developm ent h a s a specific stra tegy aim ed a t th e b u sin ess skills requ irem en ts of w om en in b u s in e ss . 'W omen in B usiness ' S em inars were successfu lly ru n in D arw in (45 a ttendees) an d Alice Springs (50 a ttendees) in O ctober/N ovem ber 1993. S im ilar sem in ars are p lanned for o ther Territory cen tres in 1994. The developm ent of netw orking g roups is being encouraged an d su p p o rt w as provided tow ard the foundation of a N orthern T erritory B ran ch of the A u stra lian B usin ess an d Professional W omen s A ssociation Inc. O ther su p p o rt activities are p lanned in 1994. The D ep artm en t of In d u strie s an d Developm ent is an active sp o n so r /su p p o r te r of the developm ent of skills for w om en in b u s in ess and will rem a in pro-active in th is area .
