Effective an d affordable preven tion of w ork rela ted in ju ry an d disease, p ro tection of th e public and the env ironm ent from h aza rd o u s su b s ta n c e s and processes, fair com pensation for people in ju red a t w ork and the ir rehab ilitation , a re essen tia l e lem ents of grow th and prosperity for Territory industry . R ecent legislative developm ents will con tribu te to the occupa tions in w hich m any w om en w ork being trea ted equally w ith m ale dom inated occupations. N ew O c cu p a tio n a l H ea lth a n d S a fe ty R e g u la tio n s New occupational h ea lth an d safety regu la tions com m enced u n d e r the W ork H ealth A ct in D ecem ber 1992. T hese conso lidated regu la tions apply to all w orkplaces, in d u strie s and occupations (excluding m ining) w hereas previously there were only detailed regu la tions in re la tion to co n stru c tio n w ork and heavy m achinery. Provisions are now in place to p ro tec t the h e a lth an d safety of people in the fem ale dom inated sec to rs su c h a s retail, hospitality , service and h ea lth industries . T here h a s been a change in the definition of w orker for th e p u rp o ses of the w orkers com pensation provisions of the Act. The definition is now linked to w he ther or n o t a person h a s Pay As You E a rn (PAYE) tax deducted from th e ir pay by the ir employer. This rem oves any po ten tia l d isp u te a b o u t the s ta tu s of an in jured w orker an d h a s e n su red coverage for certa in fem ale w orkers.
