ENVIRONMENT The N orthern T erritory G overnm ent is com m itted to m anag ing and pro tec ting the environm ent to m eet the needs of p re sen t an d fu tu re genera tions an d h a s in troduced pro jects including developm ent of an ecologically rep resen ta tive system of p ro tected areas, the beau tification of D arw in an d the Territory and D esert Wildlife Park. The Legislative A ssem bly h a s estab lished a Sessional Com m ittee on the env ironm ent w hich am ongst o th er th ings will exam ine policy on env ironm ent m anagem ent. Ecologically Sustainable Development The C om m onw ealth G overnm ent h a s developed and adop ted a N ational S tra tegy for Ecologically S usta inab le D evelopm ent (ESD) a s a m ajor principle in its decision m aking w hich h a s been endorsed by the N orthern T erritory an d S tate G overnm ents. The N ational S tra tegy specifically ta rg e ts gender issu es a s key considera tions in the developm ent an d im plem entation of policies, p rogram s an d actions by governm ents. As p a rt of th is com m itm ent, governm ents have agreed to: recognise w om ens in te res ts in the developm ent of nationally coordinated public education and inform ation m ateria l aim ed a t im proving aw areness of ESD issues; con tinue to provide inform ation and seek in p u t from w om ens rep resen ta tive groups on ESD issues; en su re partic ipa tion of wom en in developing cooperative app roaches to resource m anagem en t issues; and en su re partic ipa tion of w om en on ESD related decision m aking bodies and advisory groups.
