SPORT AND RECREATION S port and recreation m ake real con tribu tions to the lifestyle of T errito rian s and the good hea lth of the com m unity. The G overnm ent is active in the prom otion of spo rt and recreation , th rough facilities for regional, na tional an d in te rnational sport, encouraging people to take the o ppo rtun ity to com pete in, or enjoy, sporting and recrea tional activities. $25 million earn ings from the Territory Lottery h as been com m itted to the prom otion and su p p o rt of spo rt and recrea tion in the Territory. Women in Sport and Recreation Strategy At a na tional level the W omen in Sport U nit a t the A ustra lian S ports C om m ission h a s d raw n up and adopted a N ational W omen in S port and R ecreation Policy. To im plem ent th a t policy a stra tegy docum ent, The A ustra lian W omen in Sport and Recreation Strategy 1992-1994, w as lau n ch ed in con junction w ith the S ta tes and T erritories in 1992. A com m itm ent w as so u g h t from State and Territory agencies to im plem ent the S trategy into eight targeted o rgan isations by 1994. Women in Sport and Recreation Project Officer The N orthern T erritory D epartm en t of Sport and R ecreation h a s appo in ted a project officer for wom en in sp o rt and recreation . The p rim ary role of the project officer is to increase the partic ipation , s ta tu s an d recognition of w om en and girls in sp o rt and recreation. A N orthern Territory policy and stra tegy docum ent h a s now been form ulated to a d raft stage. Its m ission s ta te m e n t is: To promote and facilita te the participation o f w om en and girls in sport and recreation throughout the Northern Territory.
