T he co n cep t o f th e A ra fu ra S p o rts F es tiv a l w as deve loped w ith the o b jec tive to p rov ide spo rtsm en and w om en w ith op p o rtu n itie s to ga in experience in com petition w ith reg ional n e ighbou rs , a t a level w h ich w ou ld p rov ide a sp r in g b o a rd fo r su c c e s s in th e A u s tra lia n n a tio n a l arena. A s in te rn a t io n a l c o m p e t i t io n is n o rm a lly re se rv ed fo r the elite o f the sporting w orld , the A ra fu ra S po rts F es tiv a l is u n iq u e in th a t it o ffe rs a th le te s fro m a m u ch b ro a d e r c ro ss- s e c tio n , th e o p p o r tu n ity to re p re s e n t th e ir coun try , state, prov ince o r c ity in an in ternational fes tiv a l u n d er gam es cond itions. T e a m s fro m th e N o rth e rn T e rr i to ry , N o rth Q ueensland , N orth W est A ustra lia , P ap u a N ew G u inea , Indonesia , B runei, M alaysia , S ingapore , H ong K ong and the P h illip ines to o k p art in n ine teen d iffe ren t sports. 1 368 com petito rs and 9 4 0 team o ffic ia ls from these a reas p a rtic ipa ted in seven days o f h igh standard com petition a t w orld class venues at M a rra ra S p o rtin g C o m p lex an d th ro u g h o u t D arw in . T he D arw in (and N orthern T errito ry ) co m m u nity re sponded very favourab ly to th e F estiva l, as show n by the hund reds w ho ass is ted in a vo lun tary capacity , and the very go o d crow ds at the open ing cerem ony and m any o f the sporting events. A n in d e p e n d e n t ev a lu a tio n re p o r t in d ica ted tha t 93% o f the partic ipan ts w ere very satisfied w ith the overa ll experience o f the Festiva l, and 6% found it sa tisfactory . N early 70% ind ica ted they w o u ld defin ite ly p artic ipa te in th e nex t festiva l, an d a fu r th e r 23% th o u g h t they w ou ld p robab ly partic ipa te . T he cost o f the festiva l to the N orthern T errito ry G overnm en t w as $830 0 0 0 o v e r tw o years . T he evalua tion rep o rt ind ica tes tha t a sim ila r am ount o f add itiona l econom ic ac tiv ity w as genera ted by the v is itin g team s. It c a n b e e x p e c te d th a t th e G o v e rn m e n ts con tribu tion w ill decrease as fu r th e r sponsorsh ip support is acquired . T he fu tu re o f the A rafu ra S ports F estiva l is assured. It is already un iq u e hav ing filled a gap in th e very com petitive sports m arket. 5.3.2 The H onda M asters Gam es T he H onda C en tra l A ustra lian M asters G am es w ere h e ld in A lice S prings from 13-21 O ctober 1990. T h ese G am es are reco g n ised as the p rem ie r M asters G am es in A ustra lia , h av in g ga ined a repu ta tion as a w ell o rgan ised ev en t ca te ring fo r the needs o f m atu re aged ath letes. T he g ro w th and d ev e lo p m en t o f th e H onda M asters G am es since 1986, w hen a lm ost 1 000 co m p e tito rs to o k p art, to 1990 w hen 3 00 0 en tered , g ives the O ffice every co n fid en ce tha t the G am es w ill con tinue to be a m a jo r ev en t on A u stra lia s spo rting calendar.
