Mr Speaker, while on the subject of aboriginal art, I turn to this Government's support for the Aboriginal Cultural Foundation. The Aboriginal Cultural Foundation has as one of its principal aims, the rescue, fostering and development of traditional forms of aboriginal cultural expression, including song, dance and ceremony, under the control of the traditional cultural elders. This Government has provided funding of over $215 000 to the Aboriginal Cultural Foundation since 1991 to assist with staging traditional ceremonies. The Federal Government abandoned the Aboriginal Cultural Foundation in 1991, despite ongoing representation by traditional elders, which left the NT Government alone to fund this important cultural activity. Quite clearly the key issue here is whether traditional aborigines are to be permitted to have their own national cultural organisation, under their own control, to serve their own cultural interests. It is a cultural imperative that traditional elders have control over their own culture and the Cultural Foundation provides this vehicle. 7
