THE COMMONWEALTH GOVERNMENT HAS CUT AROUND 5 PERCENT FROM THE PROPOSED HIGHER EDUCATION BUDGETS FOR THE TRIENNIUM, 1997 TO 1999. AND THERE WILL BE NO SUPPLEMENTARY FUNDING FOR SALARY INCREASES IN THIS PERIOD. CURRENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT SALARIES WILL INCREASE IN THIS TRIENNIUM BY AT LEAST 5 PERCENT AND POSSIBLY AS MUCH AS 12 PERCENT AT SOME INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. MR SPEAKER, I AM INFORMED THAT THE UNIVERSITY IS WORKING POSITIVELY TO ACHIEVE THE TARGETS SET AS A RESULT OF THE CUTS TO ITS BASE FUNDING THROUGH A VARIETY OF EFFICIENCY INITIATIVES, AND TO INCREASE ITS REVENUE THROUGH ENTREPRENEURIAL EFFORTS AND TO DEVELOP A RESERVE FUND TO ACT AS A BUFFER.
