STRATEGIC STAFF MANAGEMENT ANNUAL REPORT 1994-95 STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The Department is committed to the professional development of its staff and acknowledges its responsibility pursuant to section 28(2)(g) of the Public Sector Employment and Management Act to report annually on its staff development program. The Department's Staff Development Program has not yet been developed. A committee, however, is to be established at the beginning of the next financial year. The role of the committee will be to develop the Program, and thereafter implement, monitor and evaluate its effectiveness. A Staff Development Officer is employed within the Department The Staff Development Officer provides information to Unit and Section Heads regarding the availability of training and development programs and also coordinates the administrative support necessary for staff to participate in professional development activities and study assistance. The introduction of a performance management system has provided the mechanism to identify individual training requirements of staff. A review of this system will be carried out as part of the development of a Departmental Staff Performance Management System and as a part of the Staff Development Program. 70
