6 KATHERINE TIMES, WEDNESDAY MAY 20 2015 www.katherinetimes.com.au >> news SOME of Katherines most needy residents will be on the minds of local Salvation Army volunteers this weekend when they begin fundraising for the annual Red Shield Appeal on Saturday. The Salvation Army is aiming to fundraise $7000 between the weekend and May 30, and Captain Julie Howard said the Red Shield Appeal was run a bit differently in Katherine. For people who are used to the Salvos doorknocking, weve found its more beneficial and safer to be in a static location for the appeal, she told the Katherine Times. Were looking for as many volunteers as possible to assist. Volunteers will man a stall in Katherine Oasis Shopping Centre from 9am on Saturday, and Capt Howard said funds raised would be used to help people in town who were battling homelessness, through the Salvation Army-run Beacon drop-in centre. Weve got 200 people on our books and, on average, we get about 50 people through a day, she said. [The Beacon] is for anybody, but the majority of people we get through are long-grassers or people doing it tough. To volunteer for the Red Shield Appeal, call 0447 082 514.
