Arnhem and Tiw i Islands 2004-05 Northern Territory Budget 6 Regional Highlights Arnhem and Tiw i Islands Regional Highlights 7 2004-05 Northern Territory Budget $1.51M to provide open learning educational programs and professional support to students and support for teachers in specialist fi elds of music, language, health, physical education and the Board of Studies $1.22M to provide student and school support services including curricula for schools and special education needs support $0.98M in Territory student assistance travel schemes and remote teacher housing $0.18M for programs to support students with a disability $0.14M for the Accelerated Literacy Project to improve English literacy outcomes for students Better Health $13.3M for community-based health services in the region $13M for acute medical, surgical and obstetrical services at Gove District Hospital $0.49M for renal dialysis services including supporting clients in their home and community-based treatment, including $0.39M for the operation of the clinic at Nguiu, with the balance for smaller clinics through East Arnhem $0.19M for a coordinated range of services to minimise the harm associated with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs Regional Development $4.73M in grant funding for Indigenous Community Housing Organisations to construct, maintain and manage community housing stock (includes the Miwatj and Northwest Regional Governing Council areas) $0.46M to provide school and special transport services in the Nhulunbuy region $0.25M for the priority repair and maintenance of various aerodromes and barge landings in the region $0.25M for libraries in Nhulunbuy, Milingimbi, Angurugu, Alyangula, Umbakumba, Pirlangimpi, Ramingining, Milikapiti and Nguiu $0.22M to resource Groote Eylandt Regional Coordinator Position to address a need for greater coordination of Government service delivery and provide strategic direction for developments in the region Lifestyle and Environment $0.19M to continue the Community Harmony Strategy, addressing the health, well-being and social behaviours of itinerant groups, to assist itinerants to move away from destructive lifestyles to either return to their home communities or lead a more productive lifestyle in town $0.16M for fi re management and prescribed burning, weed management and feral animal control programs to protect life, assets and biodiversity in parks $0.12M for the Marine Ranger Program in Maningrida and Tiwi Islands to assist the local community to manage their sea country in conjunction with Commonwealth agencies $0.1M for visitor management programs in regional parks to provide resources and services, including tour guides, fact sheets and interpretive materials $72 000 for feral animal control programs $30 000 funding for the Garma Festival to celebrate traditional and contemporary culture of the Yolngu people from north-east Arnhem Land $7 000 to continue the Junior Park Ranger program, providing resources and assistance for remote schools Infrastructure Highlights $2M for upgrading remote schools across the Territory which will include $1M for a new secondary school facility at Shepherdson College $1M for new police post at Numbulwar comprising reception area, offi ce, interview room, two cells, exercise area, and separate visitors area and communications facilities $1M for selected gravelling of Oenpelli Link Cahills Crossing to Central Arnhem Road $0.31M to equip new production bores and rising mains at Oenpelli $0.12M Nhulunbuy High School classroom and other upgrades $80 000 urban enhancement for Nhulunbuy town entrance statement
