R eta i le rs Retailers continue to support A ustralias efforts to reduce the environmental impact o f packaging waste through the Australian Retailers Associations (ARA) participation in the NPC. The ARA promotes the NPC to its members and encourages participation in workshops on action plan development and reporting. We have also continued to seek enhanced support for the NPC among other industry bodies. The use o f plastic bags has been a key issue for the ARA and the NPC over the last year. Together we Australian Retailers Association have developed an industry-wide program to manage this issue based on a co-operative approach between industry, consumers and all spheres o f government. The focus o f our work is the ARA Code o f Practice fo r the Management o f Plastic Bags, developed by the ARA alongside the NPC and environment ministers, which contains strong targets to reduce bag use and increase recycling. This voluntary and cooperative approach reflects the N PCs founding principles, and we are confident it will allow us to achieve the Codes targets and protect Australian businesses and consumers from suffering a tax, while providing a sustainable positive outcome for the environment. With community support for recycling at an all-time high, using communication products made from recycled materials, that are also recyclable at the end-use point is no longer a luxury. I ts a necessity. In an environment where the business community is increasingly scrutinised for its practices, performance is no longer based on financial results alone. Today, shareholders, employees and customers are evaluating organisational performance on the basis o f financial, environmental and social achievements. And in light o f the National Packaging Covenant, organisations are also expected to provide more effective management o f used packaging based on the principles o f shared responsibility and product stewardship. R E M A IL : A Sym bol o f E n v iro n m e n ta l S tew ard sh ip At Australian Paper, our goal is to deliver quality solutions that meet our customers needs in a manner that is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. It is with this in mind that Australian Paper introduced the REMAIL campaign for its 60% recycled content envelope paper. Born out o f product stewardship, the REMAIL logo has been developed to educate the marketplace, raise awareness and drive support for recycling amongst the business community and the mailing industry. Consisting o f a logo which indicates the minimum percentage o f recycled fibre used in the paper, the campaign is designed to establish an organisations environmental credentials. D riv in g A w areness fo r R ecycling Using recycled paper demonstrates an organisations commitment to the environment and to the National Packaging Covenant. Recycled paper is ideal for internal and external communications including letters, business cards, annual reports, brochures and most importantly the envelope.
