06 NEWS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 5 2017 NTNE01Z01MA - V1 TERRITORY Chief Minister Michael Gunner will meet with Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis to progress redevelopment of the Parap Swimming Pool to include the addition of a pool for toddlers. Mr Gunner wrote to Cr Vatskalis on Friday proposing the addition of a toddlers pool and the creation of an early childhood precinct along Ross Smith Ave. I am eager to commence discussions at an opportune time and would consider adding the stage 2 redevelopment to the Northern Australian Capital Cities Committee agenda, he wrote. Elements of the redevelopment could include the toddler pool in the new Parap pool facility and new facilities for Parap Family Centre and the Parap Preschool. The toddler pool was a much loved feature of the old pool and including the pool as part of the stage 2 redevelopment would enhance familyfriendly activities for the local area. Boat crash victim and mother Rachel Maddox with her kids Elando, 4, and Catherine 7 months Picture: JUSTIN KENNEDY A HERO mum who leapt in front of her children to save them from being struck by a speeding boat has been nominated for a Pride of Australia Award. Rachel Maddox thought only of her 2-month-old daughter and 4-year-old son when she flung herself between them and certain death or serious injury on the Finniss River on Mothers Day this year. The 26-year-old copped the brunt of the impact, suffering life-changing injuries. As a result of her actions, Ms Maddox is now in the running for News Corp Australias Pride of Australia Medal. When told the news, Ms Maddox said she was just doing what any mum would do to protect her children and never expected her actions to be rewarded. She said it felt humbling and a bit different to be nominated. Its the first time Ive been nominated for anything. If you know someone worthy of recognition nominate them at prideofaustralia.com.au JASON WALLS Mum who saved her children up for award Kid pool at Parap GARY SHIPWAY Furthermore, Parap Pre school on Ross Smith Ave and the Parap Family Centre on Charlotte St are ageing government and council facilities that are in need of investment and upgrade. I would like to commence discussions about the possibility of upgrading and allocating Parap Preschool with Parap Family Centre, utilising existing council land along Ross Smith Ave. Cr Vatskalis said he had talked to the Chief Minister, liked what he was proposing, and was keen to get the discussions moving as soon as possible. I am very excited to hear that the Government wants to sit down with us to discuss the addition of a pool for toddlers, he said. The previous council didnt include it because they didnt have the money. It just doesnt make sense not to have a pool for young children. In terms of the Parap Preschool with Parap Family Centre, this is something council and government should be working on together. 98BT 9N8"4 JOBMMTJ[FTBOEQBUUFSO .BSLFEEPXO UPCFTPME 9N8"4 5IFXPSMETNPTUCFBVUJGVMHFOVJOFIBOENBEFXPSLTPGBSU 0WFSQJFDFTNBSLFEEPXOUPCFTPMEBOE OPXNPSFBPSEBCMFUIBOFWFS MY FUEL NT (08) 8999 1999 1800 019 319 Cheapest fuel near youfind the MyFuelNT.nt.gov.au Compare fuel prices in your area Find the cheapest fuel near you Navigate to the fuel outlet of your choice Plan ahead when you are on the road 00 71 D D
