GARDENING in November can be such a fun month in all areas of the garden, with many differing garden types able to be worked on. While we have had a mild winter and essentially an extended spring, the hot days appear to have arrived, making gardening a priority when we have cool days as before long it will mostly stay warm to hot. As summer fast approaches it is critical that a range of tasks are completed as even November has on average eight days above 40C. As the days start to warm, work early morning and in the evenings, completing the majority of general planting by mid month, and then focus on preparing the garden for the hot months ahead. With special care it is possible to plant right throughout summer; Ive been doing it for years. However, its best to plant in season. During the hottest part of the day and the year, why not sit back and relax, watch a little cricket, swim or have a siesta? Plant a range of tropical species this month. Rosella, needing six months to mature and fruit, will soon thrive when planted. Peanuts are a fun crop for kids, bougainvillea love the warm days and attention can also be turned to the courtyard/patio and container gardens. As the soil temperatures warm, plants quickly put on a burst of growth before summer. Plants introduced into the garden now will thrive; do not be afraid to plant, as conditions are ideal. You simply need to ensure you water adequately to meet the plant needs. Give plants a good soak before planting and plant only into moist soil. Dont plant and then water; dry soil can cause much unnecessary stress and cause great shock as the dry soil will within minutes quickly kill off the fine hair roots. On the pruning front, time should always be set aside as plant growth can be rapid this month. By deadheading roses, weekly solid blooms will continue to form until well after Christmas. Prune springflowering ornamental Prunus species after flowering for next seasons blooms and regularly tip-prune many early summer flowering exotics that have an extended flowering season to improve floral displays. Regular light pruning can be undertaken to manage spring growth on many plant species to improve shape, consolidate growth, improve summer/autumn flowering and improve cropping on foodproducing plants. Hedge plants particularly require regular attention to ensure good form is maintained, while growth can often be rapid at this time of the year. Prune spring/summer grasses to promote strong healthy growth to reward with wonderful healthy displays during hot months. Now is an important time to plant, prune, feed and manage many fruiting plants to promote desired growth patterns, fruiting and quality produce. Ensure plants are well irrigated to limit fruit drop or poor-quality fruit. Thin deciduous fruit trees to improve fruit quality, tipprune passionfruit to promote flowers and fruit that form on new lateral growth, and control-prune new grape vines to manage desired growth patterns. Plant a wide range of fun to work in the shade that the patio/courtyard and special microclimate gardens provide. Its also time to introduce a range of summer-loving tropical species that thrive in the shade, from impatiens and begonias through to coleus. Create a new herb collection; planted now, many will be providing by Christmas. While having fun gardening priority must also be given to preparing for the hot months ahead and do not forget to service the lawnmower and edger in readiness for sustained strong growth of lawns. Your Stars by Joanne Moore Set up your garden for year An ornamental vegetable garden with a neatly clipped box hedge; (inset), flowering cherry plum (Prunus Cerasifera). tropical fruiting species including mangoes, pawpaws, pineapple, guava, bananas, passionfruit and dragonfruit early, allowing for an extended growing season before next winter. Give container gardens priority this month as its time to reinvigorate them. Re-pot as required, apply both solid and liquid fertilisers to promote strong new growth, and plant masses of colourful flowering annuals to complement perennial container plants, giving great colour for the festive season. As the weather warms and especially on the hot days, its
