SCOREBOARD THE return of Gibson Turner helped Palmerston claim its first victory of the 2017-18 season, a nailbiting 10-point triumph against the Darwin Buffaloes at TIO Stadium on Saturday night. The Alice Springs star booted three goals, including one from long range after the siren, to top off a sweet victory for the black and whites after a fruitless opening three rounds. Palmerston had to do it against an Adam Sambono-inspired Darwin outfit, with the draft prospect booting three goals in his first appearance of the season. The Magpies took a 10point lead into the final change but an early goal to the Buffaloes player/coach Matt Campbell his second of the night made for a nervous finish for Palmerston boss Tavis Perry. Notwithstanding, when the game was there to be won, they edged the contest. The hyped inclusion of Liam Jurrah didnt eventuate for Palmerston, but Turner did play and gave the Magpies a big lift after leading Rovers to the CAFL premiership this season. Rovers' Gibson Turner put in a strong performance for Palmerston this weekend. Two of the premiership favourites, Panthers and Demons fought it out in an epic battle, with scores close for the entire five-inning match. With Demons trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the third inning, the club scored the final four runs of the match to snatch victory and claim its first win of the new season. Pitcher Sol Albury-Harrington was influential in the breakthrough win, pitching the whole contest and shutting Panthers out in the final three innings. Wes Tohi was also one of the best performed for Demons, dominating at the plate as he hit a triple and a double to get into scoring position. Panthers captain-coach Stephen Erikson was his usual impressive self for his side, having a good game behind the plate as well as consistently getting on base. The win is Demons first of the 2017-18 season after losing their opening-round match, while the loss is Panthers first in three matches. In the Friday night fixture, Venom were able to record their first win of the new campaign with a hard-fought 8-5 victory over Pirates. With both sides looking for their first win, Venoms dangerous batting line-up proved to be too much for Pirates to handle with six runs in the fourth inning the difference. Pirates pitcher Brett Trindle had a standout performance on the mound, but Pirates inexperience in the field hurt the side. Venom pitcher Aaron Turner was credited with the win on the night, striking out eight batters in a terrific display of command. The win sees Venom off the mark in season 2017-18. Meanwhile, Pirates remain winless after two games of the new year. However, with the majority of their squad new to baseball, the Pirates continue to show improvement.
