Construction 137 Northern Territory Economy e: estimate; f: forecast 1 Inflation adjusted, base year 201011 Source: ABS Cat. No. 8755.0; Department of Treasury and Finance Engineering Construction Since 200001, engineering construction in the Territory has been driven mainly by the major projects listed above. The substantial value of these developments has meant that engineering construction has become the most substantial component of construction activity in the Territory. Construction activity associated with the INPEX and Total joint venture Ichthys project will primarily be classified as engineering construction and the scale of the project means that engineerings relative share of total Territory construction activity will increase further. It is forecast that at the peak of construction activity for the Ichthys project in 201415, engineering activity will account for about 80percent of total construction activity in the Territory. Major projects that are expected to have a substantial impact on Territory construction activity between 201213 and 201617 are described below. In January 2012, a final investment decision was made by INPEX and Total to proceed with development of the Ichthys liquids and gas field, located 820kilometres south west of Darwin. The project involves the construction and placement of a floating production, storage and offtake vessel and associated facilities at the Ichthys field, an 889 kilometre subsea pipeline to transport natural gas and liquids to BlaydinPoint on the Middle Arm peninsula of Darwin Harbour, and construction of an LNG plant and associated facilities at Blaydin Point. The construction of the LNG plant and associated onshore facilities will have the greatest impact on the Territory construction industry and will include: construction of the 3500bed Ichthys workers accommodation village at Howard Springs; site development works at Blaydin Point; dredging of Darwin Harbour; civil infrastructure development including piling, foundations and roads; Chart 11.1: Construction Work Done in the Territory1 (moving annual total) 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 97 98 99 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 13e 14f 15f 16f 17f Total construction Engineering Non-residential Residential Year ended June Railway, Bayu-Undan Laminaria-Corallina Darwin LNG plant Bonaparte gas, GEMCO Alcan G3 Ichthys, Montara $B Ichthys, GEMCO Phase 2, McArthur River Ichthys peak Workers village, new prison, AACo abattoir Ichthys Project
