Description
Manuscript in blue ballpoint pen by H. Wallace about Photographs PH1035/0077-0080 depicting a policeman's funeral: I think the picture on this page is of a policeman's funeral. I can remember my father (i.e. John McIlwraith) speaking of this event -- he said the gangers (or workers) received their pay brought to them on a train guarded by a policeman -- apparently the policeman's gun went off & he shot himself in a leg artery -- his trousers were removed to try and stem the bleeding but the gentleman died. I mentioned about his trousers because my Dad said when he went back the next day the constable's pay was still in his pocket. H. Wallace. In fact, the incident relates to the death of Constable A.R. Clapp at the 71-mile. Clapp died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound sustained in the course of arresting three men for the theft of railway property.
