Description

A compilation map showing all self-funded aerial surveys mounted over the years by Donald Mackay. Shows watercourses, saltpans, claypans, named trees and shrubs, 'sandridges', and numbered reconnaissance flights. Planes (all flown by Captain Frank Neale) were: Anec; Percival Gull; Monospar; Dragonfly. Several lakes named in honour of explorers or plane (Lake Mackay; Lake Neale; Lake Anec). Mackay was the last great explorer, and his maps contain accurate cartographic data to fill blank spots of previous maps, as well as text providing landing warnings and recommendations, description of vegetation and terrain, and sightings of 'abo fires' indicating nearby drinking water sources. "Memoir' describes method of construction of the map from 'strip maps' charted during reconnaissance flights; bases and cartographic data given. The map surveyor and navigator for all Mackay aerial survey expeditions was Commander Harry T. Bennett.,
