Jack McCarthy or Irish Mac immortalised in Jeannie Gunn's 'We of the Never Never',was a carter who plied out of Elsey Station. He together with his wife, a former hotel proprietor from Thursday Island of Irish descent, settled at Milner's Bore or Pond out of Newcastle Waters where they raised cattle and peanuts on a small holding. In a newspaper article by Ernestine Hill, July 1934, she notes that Jack died two months earlier suggesting that this photograph was taken about 1933-4.,
