TUESDAY JUNE 6 2017 NEWS 07 V1 - CAVE01Z01MA Christine Ansorge THE Clown Doctors are back for another year of laughter at Alice Springs Hospital thanks to a $64,000 grant from the US-based Newmans Own Foundation, the private foundation established by the late Hollywood legend Paul Newman. The Clown Doctors program is designed to bring humour therapy, emotional healing and empowerment to seriously ill children and their families while undergoing treatment in hospital. The grant will be used to support the Clown Doctors program at the hospital which features 50 weekly clown doctor visits throughout 2017. The grant will also help fund the ongoing training of the two local clown doctors Dr Curly and Dr Bump. Alan Bethune, who plays Dr Bump, said he has been performing at the hospital for the past four to five years. One of the great joys is to actually distract kids when there is a procedure happening. Its incredible what a little bit of laughter or lightness can bring, he said. Foundation CEO and president Robert Forrester said Paul Newman was deeply committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged children. Paul Newman believed we all have the opportunity to improve the lives of others and he wanted to make a difference, especially for children with life-limiting conditions around the globe, he said. Laughter is the best medicine Dr Bump (Alan Bethune) with patients Andiee Thompson-Groube and Sula Rowling and dad Rohan Rowling.
