NT Department of Land Resource Management NT Remote Communities Storm Tide Study and Inundation Mapping J1507-PR001B 1 Systems Engineering Australia Pty Ltd July 2016 1. Introduction This report documents tropical cyclone (TC) storm tide hazard analyses that will provide the basis for reliable risk analyses of major remote towns and indigenous communities on the West Coast, Arnhem Land and Tiwi Islands. The Scope of Work is provided in Appendix A for reference while the methodology follows recommendations from GHDSEA (2015) and includes various extracts and illustrations from that report. 1.1 Background Most of the Northern Territory (NT) coast is subject to impacts from severe TC events, which includes their potentially damaging and deadly storm surge. When combined with the local astronomical tide, the resulting storm tide is capable of causing significant coastal inundation on low-lying coasts. As a result, many coastal communities in NT are potentially vulnerable to storm tide impacts and the NT Floodplain Management Committee (NTFMC) commissioned this Study as part of an ongoing investigation into the risk of storm tide impacts. Figure 1-1 summarises the various storm tide study regions across NT that are the subject of current NTFMC investigations. Figure 1-1 NT storm tide study regions and stages. (map supplied by NT DLRM)
