12 LIFESTYLE TUESDAY MARCH 28 2017 CAVE01Z01MA - V1 NatioNal Youth Week 2017 A Centralian Advocate Advertising Feature Know risks SEXUALLY transmitted infections (STIs) are more widespread in the NT than most people think so its important to use protection. You can protect yourself from these diseases. Using condoms correctly and consistently can prevent transmission in most cases. Young people aged between 15 and 24 years account for the majority of sexually transmitted infections. Most are not aware of the risk they take when having unprotected sex. The majority of sexually transmitted diseases do not produce any immediate symptoms or signs so people do not know they have them until they get tested. Yet, STIs can cause medical issues, such as infections in the pelvis that may lead to infertility if not treated early. Last year there were more than 2600 cases of chlamydia and 1700 cases of gonorrhoea diagnosed in the NT. The Territory also has high rates of syphilis and trichomoniasis, although much lower rates of the HIV infection. If a woman has syphilis when she is pregnant, her newborn baby can be affected physically and mentally and can carry lifelong impairments, or even die. Pregnant women should get tested for syphilis and other STIs during pregnancy. As most STIs are often silent, it is important that people have at least a yearly sexual health check-up. At the first Youth Action Group meeting for 2017 were Mayor Damien Ryan (back, left), Kieren Tohi, Youssef Saudie, Councillor Jacinta Price, chief executive officer Rex Mooney, Corporate and Community Services director Skye Price, Penny Reu (middle left), Melanie Gunner, Cassie Boyle (front row) and Annabelle Gunner (front). Youth has say THERE is a group of young people in town who are determined to solve youth issues. Alice Springs Town Councils Youth Action Group (the YAG) meets monthly to discuss youth issues in Alice Springs, find possible solutions, and organise a range of events to get youth engaged and involved. It is chaired by Mel Gunner, Councils Youth Services Officer for 2017, this year. The YAG is all about representing and empowering young people, she said. Its fantastic that council is acknowledging our opinions, talents and ideas, because we have so much to contribute to Alice Springs. Its our town too. The YAG wants to build a strong and appreciative relationship between our adult leaders and our youth community. As leaders of tomorrow, its great for us to have these opportunities to develop skills in leadership and collaboration. The Youth Services Officer role was created by council in 2015, appointing a new young person to lead the YAG each year. Ms Gunner has big shoes to fill, with both previous officers being instrumental in developing a number of new youth events for Alice Springs. The group has had a strong start to 2017, with a diversely skilled group of 13 members, many still in high school. They are joined at each meeting by Mayor Damien Ryan, Councillors Jacinta Price and Jade Kudrenko, and several of Councils executive and community development staff. Each meeting gives councils staff and elected members an opportunity to get young peoples perspectives on Alice Springs community issues. The YAG already has a bumper calendar of activity to organise, with major events for 2017 including the Youth Recycled Art Prize and a Movie Marathon during National Youth Week, followed by the Phoney Film Festival and YAM Fest Youth Arts and Music Festival later in the year. The group also supports a range of community and council events, including the Desert Smart Ecofair, Heart Foundation Walk, and Relay for Life. The YAG is still looking for more members. anyone younger than 25 who wants to get involved in the Youth Action Group, you can contact Alice Springs Town Council by phone (8950 0500) or by email (astc@astc.nt.gov.au).
