WEDNESDAY MARCH 8 2017 NT BUSINESS REVIEW 21 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA AS WE all know, China is Australias largest trading partner; indeed when China slows down buying our iron ore, Australia feels the pinch. We also have a free-trade agreement which all choose to ignore. You have to ask where would our cost of living or the price of housing be if not for the cheaper prices from China, given the fact that Australia has no manufacturing to speak of, government departments still practice the 50-year-old protection laws and they are selective in particular for BHP and BlueScope Buy Local is the call. So, whats local? Who is local? Is it BHP Billiton BlueScope, is it Brietry, Audi, Cosco? It may be Inpex! A good example is the big Australian BHP, now the big international BHP Billiton, and BHPs ex-child BlueScope both international players that BlueScope manufactures products in China using cheap Chinese labour then brings the product to Australia and sells it as BlueScope Australian steel. Australian taxpayers have been taken for a ride with government departments support ing the big international. Closer to home, the hypoc risy and waste of taxpayers money continues. Some smart public servants and politicians a few years back decided that the only suitable house for Aboriginals is a concrete and block because they trash it they say how embarrassing and discriminative to all indigenous people. Build at a huge cost of as much as $800,000 for a house in a remote area the same will cost $250,000 in Darwin. Government actions hypocrisy and a waste of taxpayers hard-earned with factories and mines all over the world, where Australians own maybe 10 per cent of the stock. All our money goes out from Australia, they close down factories in Australia and open new factories in China, Japan, New Zealand and the US, so how Australian are they? Why do government departments insist that we buy BHP/BlueScope to the exclusion of others of the same quality and cheaper? Tradies are scared to use other than BlueScope, as government departments insist on it. Its extraordinary and stupid that if you declare that you purchase steel from China you have to provide a test certificate on strength (which I think is fair enough) but you go and buy steel locally which has come from China, Japan or Korean its OK, its local! The public has been brainwashed to believe that BlueScope is the only good product and theyre paying through their nose. It is hypocrisy to extreme OPINION GEORGE MILATOS Darwin developer I am yet to meet one Aboriginal person who likes these houses. They are very small, hot boxes built with no consultation with the local people, and Aboriginal people hate them but successive governments refuse to allow alternative construction which will bring the cost to build down by $100,000-$200,000 per house and create desperately needed local employment in communities. Public servants and politicians who are trusted with taxpayers money spend millions of dollars on ill-informed advice. It makes the travel rort by politicians look like petty cash. Three years ago I had the misfortune to witness the unbelievable where the Department of Housing paid $430,000 more for two small duplex houses at Elcho Island, because one officer preferred concrete floor to steel and fibro cement floor! The housing departments could have built five units for the price of four. What an abuse of tax payers money! It is becoming difficult to know which companies are truly local Tenders Invited deparTmenT of InfrasTrucTure pLannInG and LoGIsTIcs For further information regarding Northern Territory Government Tenders go to www.nt.gov.au/tenders Tenders and QuoTaTIons reLeased Tender Number T16-2477 Title: Alice Springs Region - Alice Springs Hospital - Staff Accommodation Upgrade Hot Water Plant Contractor: SG Plumbing Bros Pty Ltd Value: $209,448.85 Tender Number T17-1139 Title: Alice Springs Region - Tanami Road (Various Locations) - Flood Damage Repairs from CH510km to CH527km Contractor: Roadtech Constructions Pty Ltd A/T/F The Roadtech Constructions Trust t/a Roadtech Constructions Pty Ltd Value: $283,043.00 Tender Number T16-1654 Title: Alice Springs Hospital - Construct New Palliative Care Facility Contractor: Scope Building NT Pty Ltd Value: $6,177,153.00 Tender Number T16-2434 Title: Alice Springs Region - Jalistan House - Office Fitout for Public Guardian Contractor: Probuild (NT) Pty Ltd t/as Probuild NT Value: $143,270.00 Tender Number T16-1727 Title: Alice Springs Region - Engawala (Lot 70) - Construct 1 x 2 Bedroom Government Employee Housing (GEH) Dwelling Contractor: M and C Fior Constructions Pty Ltd t/a Bullant Building Value: $452,500.00 Tender Number T16-2469 Title: Alice Springs Region - Finke Health Centre - Install New Toilet and Staff Facility Contractor: S&R Building & Construction Pty Ltd Value: $91,900.00 Tender Number T16-1697 Title: Darwin Region - Casuarina Senior College - External Painting Contractor: Mario Vorrasi t/a All Paints and Painting Service Value: $564,964.00 Tender Number T16-2298 Title: Darwin Region - Humpty Doo Primary School - New Carpark Facilities Contractor: Whatareya Pty Ltd t/a Diggamen Civil Contracting Value: $218,317.00 Tender Number T16-2279 Title: Darwin Region - TIO Stadium - Lighting Upgrade Works Award Details Contractor: B&K Investments (NT) Pty Ltd t/as NT Electrical Group Value: $3,147,784.00 Tender Number T16-2508 Title: Darwin Region - Gunbalanya - Demolition of 9 Lots and Construction of 10 x 3 Bedroom Remote Community Housing (RCH) Dwellings Contractor: Ri-con Contractors Pty Ltd Value: $3,570,160.00 Tender Number T16-2359 Title: Katherine Region - Wugularr School - Supply and Install Preschool Play Area Shade Structure Contractor: Atkin Building Co Pty Ltd Value: $342,810.00 Tender Number T16-2403 Title: Tennant Creek Region - Sandover Highway - Gravel Resheet CH.295.93km - CH303.17km and CH333.49km - CH336.25km Contractor: Phillips Earthmoving Contractors PL t/a Phillips Earthmoving Contractors PL Value: $469,980.00 Tender Number T17-1143 Title: Tennant Creek Region - Borroloola (53 Anyula Street - Lot 602) - Demolition and Construction of 1x3 Bedroom Urban Public Housing (UPH) Dwelling Closing: 20/03/2017 Tender Number T16-2273 Title: Tennant Creek Region - Robinson River Lot 112 - Construct New Police Overnight Facility Closing: 22/03/2017 Tender Number T17-1146 Title: Tennant Creek Region - Wutunugurra (Lots 13,14,15,16,17 and 18) - Remote Community Housing (RCH) - Demolition of 6 Dwellings and Construction of 6 x 3 Bedroom Dwellings Closing: 22/03/2017 Tenders and QuoTaTIons awarded Keep an eye on Territory road conditions before you head out by visiting www.roadreport.nt.gov.au or follow us on facebook at facebook.com/roadreportnt
