The 16-year-old was at deaths door this week after succumbing to the disorder only hours after playing in a Premier League final for Nightcliff. We nearly lost him, Mummerys grandfather Allan told the NT News. It was only the magnificent work and dedication of the doctors and staff at the public hospital that pulled him back from what could have been a disaster for the family. Mummerys body temperature topped 40C when admitted to hospital the morning after the Tigers lost to Wanderers in the qualifying final. So they did a lot of blood tests to find out and found the bug, but that was only the first step because they didnt know what it was. Some people tell me it might be an offshoot of the Nightcliff Gardeners Disease (melioidosis) but we really dont know its a worrying time for us all. They had to grow the bug and try various medications to kill it, but then another one would pop up, it was a nightmare for Michael and the rest of his family. Allan Mummery said his grandsons superb fitness and positive frame of mind had saved him from deaths door. It was that close, weve had a family member by his bedside ever since the doctors began their search for an effective antibiotic to stabilise the infection.
