TUESDAY FEBRUARY 28 2017 WORLD 11 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA Tinseltown farewells much-respected Paxton BILL Paxton, a prolific and charismatic actor who had memorable roles in such blockbusters as Apollo 13 and Titanic while also cherishing his work in One False Move and other low-budget movies and in the HBO series Big Love, has died from complications due to surgery. He was 61. A family representative issued a statement yesterday on the death but provided no further details. Paxtons death added a sad note to yesterdays Academy Awards ceremonies. Paxton was never nominated but appeared in several Oscar-winning movies and was beloved and respected throughout Hollywood and beyond. Although his death wasnt noted in the In Memoriam section yesterday, his name was mentioned by its host, Jennifer Aniston. Actress Ginnifer Goodwin, who starred in Big Love with Paxton, said on the Oscar red carpet: Bill had the biggest heart. He was more alive than the others. Im having a lot of trouble understanding his being gone from my life and the world. Paxton, a Fort Worth, Texas, native, appeared in dozens of movies and television shows and seemed to be around when history was made both on and off screen. As a boy, he was in the crowd that welcomed President John F. Kennedy in Texas on the morning of Nov. 22, 1963, hours before Kennedy was killed in Dallas. As a young man, he worked in the art department for B- movie king Roger Corman, who helped launch the careers of many actors and filmmakers. Paxtons movie credits included some of the signature works of the past 40 years, from Titanic and Apollo 13 to The Terminator and Aliens. Television fans knew him for his role as a polygamist, with three wives who expected the best from him, in the HBO series Big Love, for which he received three Golden Globe nominations. Bill Paxton was a bighearted, thoughtful and honorable person, his Big Love costar Chloe Sevigny said. He always had a smile on his face and could entertain any room with his wonderful stories of his many amazing years in Hollywood. Paxton was currently starring in the CBS drama Training Day, which premiered February 2. The network has not said whether it will continue to air the completed episodes. Paxton is survived by his wife of 30 years, Louise Newbury, and their two children. His first marriage, to Kelly Rowan, ended in divorce. Nearly 200 storm chasers paid tribute Sunday to the late actor by spelling out his initials using GPS coordinates on a map depicting the heart of Tornado Alley. The effort was to honour the leading man in the disaster movie Twister, which inspired an entire generation of storm chasers. He was, sci-fi fans like to point out, the only actor killed by a Predator, a Terminator and an Alien. Um, IF there was an Academy Award for best dramatic ending, Hollywood heavyweights Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway would both have gone home with one of those famous golden statuettes after the worst awards ceremony gaffe in history. The Bonnie And Clyde duo were on stage to announce the final award of the night the coveted Best Picture Oscar but were given the envelope containing a back-up winners card for Emma Stones Best Actress Oscar for her part in the musical La la Land. Beattie realised something was wrong, but as soon as he showed the card to Dunaway, she blurted out: The winner is La La Land. What followed was nothing short of chaotic, as the cast and crew of la La Land launched into their acceptance speeches only to be cut short as the shows producers realised the mistake. The real winner was rival movie Moonlight, whose pro ducers were then called to the stage as a bewildered Beattie grabbed the microphone to try to explain the stuff-up to a shocked audience. I want to tell you what happened. I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone La La Land. Thats why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasnt trying to be funny, he said. Beatties explanation was later confirmed by accounting firm PwC, which is charged with keeping the Oscar winners envelopes secret. In a stunning admission of guilt, the firm issued a statement taking full responsibility for the debacle. We sincerely apologise to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture, it said. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, it was immediately corrected. We are investigating how this happened, and deeply regret it occurred. We appreci ate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation. Earlier, Stone had hinted at the double-card theory, when she said: I was holding my Best Actress In A Leading Role card that entire time. PwC confirmed it always brings two copies of the winners cards to the Academy Awards as a precaution in case one is lost or misplaced. Moonlight director Barry Jenkins was gracious in his acceptance, trying to make light of the situation. The last 20 minutes of my life have been insane. Its been other-worldly, he said, while thanking the producers of La La Land for the way they handled the situation. It was so generous and gracious of them. My love to La La Land. I think all the movies that were nominated were worthy. I noticed the commotion and I knew something strange had occurred. It made a special feeling even more special but not in the way I expected.
