Class Five The term has started off very well with the children immersed in studies of ancient Babylonian number systems, Roman Numerals and our own Hindu - Arabic numerals This week we go from our review of base ten place values into the world of decimal fractions, always with an eye on the historical reasons for how we came to use this system. In this way the math is linked with history and filled with meaning for the children. For me as a teacher, I am able to weave stories into the lessons introducing famous figures such as the great Indian mathematician Aryabhata, born 476 BC. The first Indian satellite was named after this great thinker to whom we credit the place value system as well as the concept of zero. This week the children will go with Class 6 on their first Inter-school Sports afternoon. Every Friday we either visit another school, or host a school, to play sports. It is a big step for the class to be representing our school and meeting other school children from the town - a rite of passage. I am really looking forward to undertaking this with them. Thank you to all parents who came to Sunday's bow and arrow working bee - we managed to make 40 bows and almost 150 arrows (our target is 300 arrows and 150 bows). The children and I will attempt to complete some of these as well during school hours. Our next working bee Sunday will be on May 21st, with the class meeting on Wednesday 17th May at 7pm, leading up to it. Wishing all a happy week.
