06 NEWS TUESDAY FEBRUARY 7 2017 CAVE01Z01MA - V1 Looking for a Looking for a ribbeting time? ribbeting time? Across February, rangers at Simpsons Gap will lead six spotlight discovery tours for those who are interested in learning more about frog ecology. TERRITORIANS have been urged to hop down to the Red Centre for a ribbeting frog season. Across February, rangers at Simpsons Gap near Alice Springs will lead six spotlight discovery tours for those who are interested in learning more about frog ecology. NT Parks and Wildlife Commissions Susie Armes said after rains the region has burst into life with tree frogs and burrowing frogs. These moist creatures emerge from their sandy river beds and rocky crevices to join in a chorus of song, she said. Over time the evolution of desert frogs has seen the various species adapt to the environment they inhabit, and ensure their survival in some of Australias toughest regions. Some desert frogs burrow underground in order to es cape during the dry months, she said. While underground, they produce a type of cocoon that covers their entire body (except for the nostrils). This helps to retain moisture. Most desert frogs only reproduce in response to a significant rainfall event, and as we have seen of late, the frogs have taken advantage of the rains over summer and can be heard and seen all over the region. The recent seasonal rains and temperatures have produced an Eden-like nursery for the deserts amphibious residents, she said. Numbers are limited so if you would like to make a booking you should hop to it. Make sure to secure your spot by contacting Susie Armes on 8951 8247 or email susie.armes@nt.gov.au. The planned development will occur on 30ha of land at the Arid Zone Research Institute (AZRI) and use recycled water. Minister for Primary Industry and Resources Ken Vowles said the department is providing opportunities to increase economic development in the Alice Springs region through the leasing of land for commercial opportunities. Government is focused on delivering greater on farm impact of research undertaken so this opportunity provides a clear pathway of research knowledge, Mr Vowles said. Previous research shows the land is suitable for the production of high value crops such as table grapes, dates, melons, vegetables, herbs, native bush foods, stone fruit, citrus, pomegranates and also nuts.
