CARSGUIDE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 26 2016 05 V1 - NTNE01Z01CG RUN IN I aim to buy a mid-size SUV, possibly a Mazda CX-5, and move to the NSW North Coast in January. As the new vehicle will have very few kilometres on the clock, will it do any harm to drive at freeway speeds while the engine is still settling in? Tony ONeill, email Engines are pretty-much runin on the bench at the factory and dont require the breaking-in of the old days. Just abide by the rev limits in the owners manual and try to vary speeds and load on the engine. TIRESOME WEAR My 2007 Subaru Outback has just ticked over 101,000km and Im on my third set of Yokohama tyres. I do all the right things with correct pressures, rotate when recommended, dont exceed road speed limits, sedate takeoffs, cornering and minimum braking (Im 81). Mileage is mostly on sealed country roads and highways, wear is very even on all tyres. The Yokohamas are relatively quiet, comfortable and have good adhesion but are expensive at this rate of replacement. I thought Id try Michelins for the next replacement, due in a couple of months. Ian Slater, email Angus Thompson of Michelin has the answers: Presuming his car has the 215x60R16 as standard fitment, we would recommend the Michelin Energy XM2 Primacy 3 ST for 20 per cent more mileage compared to leading competitors, 8 per cent reduction in rolling resistance to save fuel and stopping 1.2m shorter on average than competitors. But if his vehicle has the optional 215x55R17, we recommend Michelin Primacy 3 ST 215/55R17. SNORKEL OR VACUUM I have a 2016 Toyota HiLux diesel with a genuine Toyota snorkel as an option. I notice that if driving with the drivers side window down, even at idle, there is an annoying air sucking noise coming from the rear of the snorkel. For some reason the Toyota snorkel has a number of small holes on the inside of the snorkel about 15cm from the top and this creates the annoying sucking noise. I asked the dealer why they were there but they were unable to tell me. No aftermarket snorkels have these holes. Dave Cook, email Toyota spokesman Mike Breen says: These are the drainage holes, which are an additional method for draining water. The primary method is via a gap between the head and main body. The holes could be blocked but it would reduce the ultimate water separation capability. During our development and evaluation we found the noise is only really apparent at idle and is noticeably quieter once moving as the engine noise drowns it out and it also becomes quieter as the airflow rate increases. SERVICE BULLETIN I have been driving Benz cars for about 50 years, always regularly servicing them and, up to recently, ready to take them for a long interstate run believing that they will get me back safely and reliably. Recent services have started to undermine my faith in these cars authorised dealers recommended parts need replacing, including brake pads at 36,000km and front discs at 60,000km. For the latest I was presented with a quote of more than $10,000. I wonder whether Mercedes HQ knows of this recommended overservicing of their quality cars and understands this undermines owners faith. Andrew Tzouras, email Mercedes-Benz spokesman David McCarthy says: We are unaware of and certainly do not encourage dealers to over-service any customers. If there were any parts that required replacing the dealer would be able to provide measurements of any said parts and if the customer elected to, he/she would be more than welcome to inspect these parts prior to any replacement. I would advise the customer to make contact with Mercedes-Benz Brighton to have his vehicle inspected and request that the respective businesses show him the repairs to support the quotes that they have provided him. We would more than happy to oversee this inspection if required. GOT SOMETHING TO SAY? WRITE TO CARSGUIDE AT PO BOX 2808, GPO SYDNEY, NSW, 2001 OR EMAIL PAUL.GOVER@NEWS.COM.AU A STICKY PROBLEM I own a 2007 Toyota Aurion and recently I have noticed that the dash has become sticky with a very shiny effect. This reflects on to my windscreen. Toyota head office suggested that I take it to Toyota Frankston, which was unable to provide me with an explanation except to suggest that I visit a motor trimmer to repair it. I believe this is a defect are you able to contact Toyota on my behalf? Jeremy Perera, email This is a known problem and Toyota has been replacing dashboards for some time. You should push harder with the dealer and at headquarters, where I will advise them of your position. 34 STUART HWY, STUART PARK | DARWINMITSUBISHI.COM.AU | 8946 4444 LMVD403 While stocks last.
