FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18 2016 WORLD 19 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA spent 200 days aboard the ISS from 2014-15, and in between space walks and experiments took an astounding 320,000 photographs of the Earth, including typhoons, cities such as Sydney lit up at night, and the famed pyramids of Giza. Even though the ISS orbits the Earth once every 90 minutes, it took the artistic astronaut a while to get the shot of Egypt he was after: It took me until day 199 to get that shot because, although Id tried a bunch of times, it was either too cloudy, or they werent right below us, but I finally got it. Mostly I looked for whatever shots were available because every time Id go down to where the windows are it might have been day or night over Australia, or Siberia, or wherever so I took whatever shot was there. Mr Virts, who also helped to make the IMAX movie A Beautiful Planet as he floated around the Earth, is in Australia for a speaking tour and to show off some of his stunning photographs. After beginning his career with the US Air Force and working his way up to the rank of colonel, Mr Virts became a test pilot and then achieved his childhood dream of joining NASAs astronaut training program in 2000. CHRIS HOOK SPACEMANS SNAPS OUT OF THIS WORLD IN space nobody can hear you scream, which is lucky because it can get frustrating waiting for the perfect time to take a picture. Just ask Terry Virts (pictured) who even with the best photographic equipment had to wait for just the right moment to start snapping.
