Caranbirini Conservation Reserve is located 46 km south of Borroloola and just off the Carpentaria Highway. This 1,200 hectare Reserve protects habitats including sandstone escarpment, a semi-permanent waterhole and areas of open woodland. These play an important role in preserving the region's unique flora and fauna as the reserve is located within the ecological transition zone between the tropical north and the drier centre. A short gravel road suitable for two wheel drive vehicles leads to a car park. There are no camping facilities in the reserve, however three walking tracks provide for easy exploration and extraordinary sights. The five kilometre long Jagududgu loop walk explores some of the spinifex country in the reserve and should take around three hours to complete. Remember to bring plenty of water and a snack or two. One of the Territories most impressive short walks is the two kilometre Barrawulla loop walk. Make sure you allow plenty of time to explore this spectacular track as there are some amazing photo opportunities along the way. The track leads through the impressive spires of the Lost City formation, getting you up close to the weathered sandstone walls where you weave your way around corners and between towering pillars. A short track takes you to the semi-permanent Caranbirini Waterhole, a refuge for wildlife through the long dry season. Eagle- eyed visitors can spot many different birds and animals which may include the endangered Gouldian finch. Also known as Garambarini, the area has always been a favourite place for the local Gadanji people. The waterhole is an important source of food such as turtles, mussels and waterlilies. Important dreaming beings, the emu (Jagududgu) and the white cockatoo (Barawulla), form part of a dreaming trail passing through the site. It is said that Barawulla, who was born and still lives at Garambirini, never travels far from this site and is present as a pale stone high up on the escarpment overlooking the main waterhole. Lobster bisque Ingredients: 1 raw lobster tail 90 g butter 1 large onion, chopped 1 large carrot, chopped 1 stick celery, chopped cup brandy 1 cup white wine 6 sprigs fresh parsley 1 sprig fresh thyme 2 bay leaves 1 tbs tomato paste 2 tomatoes, peeled 1 litre fish stock 2 tbs cornflour cup cream Method: 1. Remove meat from lobster tail, wash and retain shell. Chop the lobster meat, cover and refrigerate. 2. Heat butter in a large pan. Add onion, carrot and celery. Cook over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened but not brown. 3. In a small pan heat brandy; set alight and carefully and quickly pour over vegetables. Shake the pan until flame dies down. Add white wine and lobster shell. Increase heat, boil mixture until it has been reduced by half. 4. Add parsley, thyme, bay leaves, tomato paste, tomato, and fish stock. Simmer without lid for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. 5. Strain mixture through a fine sieve or muslin, pressing gently down to extract all the liquid. Discard vegetables and shells. 6. Return liquid to cleaned pan. Blend rice flour or cornflour with the cream. Add to the liquid. Stir over medium heat until thickened. Add lobster meat. Cook gently without boiling about 10 minutes or until lobster meat is just cooked. Garnish with oregano leaves and paprika and serve. The Katherine and District Show is in its 49th year. Fourty-nine years of rides, best sponge cakes, rodeos, show-jumping and most importantly 49 years of volunteers who help pull the event together. Volunteers are an important part of the Katherine Show. Last year over 30 volunteers helped make the 2013 show a highlight of the Katherine calendar. Volunteers work in a wide variety of areas in the show, from art and craft to rodeo and animals. Volunteers are highly valued and their interests play a part of the area they work in. The excitement of the Katherine Show draws volunteers from across the region, many of whom return year after year to help out but were always looking for more. Volunteers get exclusive inside access to the complicated task of running the show, volunteering is also a great way to meet like-minded people in the region and contribute to your local community. Without volunteers willingly giving their time, the Katherine Show would have not enjoyed the success it has over the years.
