Sport V1 - NTNE01Z01DS SUN NEWSPAPERS, Tuesday, November 1, 2016 27 THE first time Tyson Mattiazzo raced a go-kart he got lapped twice. That was only in 2014 but hes come a long way since then. The nine-year-old can now call himself the Darwin Cyclone Series champion at Cadet 12 level, finishing on top after the three rounds of racing. He was the youngest in the field. Im very happy. The first time I went racing I got lapped twice, Tyson said. Dad asked me what sport I wanted to do, and he used to compete in go-karts so I said why not? I like how competitive it is and I want to keep racing now. Tysons dad Rob was impressed with his sons attitude to racing after his humble beginnings in the sport. He loves a challenge and wants to win, but doesnt get upset if he finishes third, Rob said of his son who attends Larrakeyah Primary School. He was happy to jump up a few years to Cadet 12 level because hes racing against his mates at that level anyway. Keelan Edwards also showed up his older competitors in the KA4 Junior Light section of the Cyclone Series. The Good Shepherd Lutheran College student is just 12 but beat some 15-year-olds to the title. He comes from a strong racing family father Graeme used to race in speedway, and New champ of the track sister Hayley is an Australian representative and former national champion in speed skiing. Im proud I got the win and I like driving fast, Keelan said. Dad has given me a lot of help were always working on the kart. Next year Id like to go down south and compete in the national titles. Bodhi Stevens took out the Cadet Nine title. The Marrara Christian College student started practising at just six, and was super keen to start racing himself after watching his father Damien trackside. Were super proud of Bodhi he first raced on his seventh birthday in August last year, his mother Lorie said. For someone so young, hes very focused when hes out there racing. Other Cyclone Series winners were: Riley McCall (Comer), Sarah Sealy (TaG Restricted Light), Steve Nicol (TaG Restricted Heavy), Kevin Norman (TaG Light) and Tim Driscoll (Tag Heavy).
