Mr Davis won the Most Outstanding third-year electrical apprentice for 2012 from the Charles Darwin University last week. The 42-year-old mature age apprentice passed his capstone exams and will shortly qualify in the electrical trade. Mr Davis, who used to work in hospitality, said he was happy to have won the lecturer based nominations. If I am what they are looking for in an apprentice, I feel pretty chuffed about it, Mr Davis said. Benash Maintenance Services owner Mal Trattles said Mr Davis had put a lot of effort into his studies and was committed to his work. Mr Davis said he loved the variety of work he does with the Katherine based business, which had recently expanded and relocated to Crawford Street. We at Benash work on pretty much everything you could think of, from pulling wires in houses to fitting very complex uninterrupted power supply installations out on the RAAF base he said. With the electrical trade every single day is different, every hour of every day is different. He said he had always been interested in electrical work, and enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together. When you take on an apprenticeship later in life, take the step to change careers, you know that its something you really want to do, he said. Mr Davis said he has taken a particular interest in computer controlled automation. He thanked his mentor Bill Bright and office staff for their support throughout his apprenticeship. Mr Trattles said the business employs 16 staff, and provided industrial, commercial and residential electrical services. >> business BELOW: Most outstanding third year apprentice Leith Davis and Benash Maintenance Services owner Mal Trattles.
