04 NEWS FRIDAY AUGUST 19 2016 CAVE01Z01MA - V1 Pirates receive a blast from the Vikings in the Battle of the Boats at the Henley on Todd Regatta. Picture: JUSTIN BRIERTY Boat strategy makes waves ARGUABLY the highlight of the Henley on Todd, the Battle of the Boats is an epic test of firepower and teamwork in an effort to win the supportive cheers of the crowd. The boats are built around four-wheel drives and crewed by Rotary club members. The Vikings are the Rotary Club of Alice Springs, the Pirates are from the Rotary Club of Stuart and the Navy, sailing HMAS Courage, represent the Rotary Club of Mbantua. None of the captains would reveal details of their strategy in the presence of the others, but Vikings captain Jayne Winter described what it was like to be involved. Its like an AFL grand final when youre the player, she said. Ive had a few injuries on the boat, trees falling down, but theres nothing more epic than being on that boat and going through a battle. Its about the smiles and the cheek you get from young and old. Its a bonding event for Alice Springs and the town needs to get behind it. Pirates driver Quinton Kessner said events like this are the heart and soul of communities.
