14 WORLD SUNDAY JULY 31 2016 NTNE01Z01MA - V1 DEMOCRATIC presidential candidate Hillary Clinton holds a six-percentage-point lead over Republican rival Donald Trump, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, the day after she formally accepted her partys nomination for the US election. Nearly 41 per cent of likely voters favour Mrs Clin ing her blue campaign bus, wrapped with the slogan Stronger Together, to open a three-day bus tour through the Rust Belt battlegrounds of Pennsylvania and Ohio. I cant think of an election that is more important in my lifetime, Mrs Clinton told thousands of supporters in a West Philadelphia arena. Its because of the stark choice thats posed to Americans in this election. Mrs Clinton stopped at a toy and plastics manufacturer in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, where she cast Mr Trump as a con artist out for his own gain. We dont resent success in America but we do resent people who take advantage of others in order to line their own pockets, said Mrs Clinton, addressing local officials and employees on the factory floor. Mr Trump is also focusing on Ohio and Pennsylvania, as states where he might make headway with blue-collar white men. That group of voters has eluded Mrs Clinton and was perhaps a hard sell after a Democratic convention that celebrated racial and gender diversity. Democrats ham mered home those themes with politicians, celebrities, gun-violence victims, law enforcement officers and activists of all races and sexual orientation. Their goal is to turn out the coalition of minority, female and young voters who twice elected President Obama while offsetting expected losses among the white men drawn to Mr Trumps message. However, Mrs Clintons acceptance speech was seen by 29.8 million people on the commercial networks, the Nielsen company said. That fell short of the 32.2 million people who watched Mr Trump speak to the Republicans a week before. Mr Trump, who used to carefully watch TV ratings during his days as star of The Apprentice, boasted about the victory during a campaign appearance in Colorado Springs. We beat her by millions on television. Millions! he said. And for the first time he encouraged his crowds antiClinton chants of lock her up. Ive been saying lets just beat her on November 8, he said, but you know what? Im starting to agree with you.
