SUNDAY JULY 31 2016 NEWS 05 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA Thousands fight for change JUSTICE FOR OUR CHILDREN Mixed messages from Giles CHIEF Minister Adam Giles has backtracked for a second time and now says he did not see footage of children being tear-gassed at Don Dale Detention Centre until it aired on 4 Corners on Monday night. On Friday morning Mr Giles told Mix 104.9 that I had seen the footage of the gassing component before Monday night. That statement appeared to be at odds with his press conference on Tuesday when he said: I can tell you this vision was new to me. I have never seen that vision that was on television last night.. He moved to clarify the situation late on Friday night in a statement. When appearing on a commercial radio station this morning, I stated that I had previously seen vision involving the use of gas on juvenile detainees in August 2014, Mr Giles said. When I made that statement, I was referring to seeing the incident by virtue of the media coverage at the time, not the actual footage. Mr Giles released an additional statement yesterday. The first time I saw the 4 Corners footage from Don Dale in 2014 and 2015 was on Monday night, he said. At the Garma Festival yesterday, indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion said he was sorry he wasnt aware of the full circumstances that were exposed this week Clearly I must be better informed about such matters, particularly when the vast majority of youths held in detention are indigenous.
